When it comes to the issue of immigration, the Democrats and Republicans could not have a more different approach. Donald Trump has argued for the building of walls, banning all Muslims from entering the United States and a general isolation tone to how we will interact with the rest of the world. This week, the Democratic Party unveiled it’s platform. It views of the United States’ role “as a beacon of hope for people seeking safety, freedom and security.”
In a perfect world, immigrants come to the United States with visas, having been documented at the border. Real life stories however tell us that this is not always the case. Many immigrants have come to the U.S. under some of the most trying circumstances, at times using smugglers. In its platform, the Democratic Party recognizes this breakdown in the immigration system.
The Democratic Party has also decided to stand with President Obama’s executive actions. The platform states, “we will defend and implement President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals and Deferred Action for Parents of Americans.”DACA They will support states that make DREAMers eligible for driver’s licenses and in-state tuition.
The detention of aliens, especially of mothers and their children has been controversial. Many have argued that such centers are inhumane and there should be better alternatives. As part of its platform, the Democratic Party “will fight to end federal, state, and municipal contracts with for-profit private prisons and private detention centers.”
One of the more interesting recommendations in the platform was the elimination of the 3-year, 10-year and permanent bars to re-entry. The platform has taken into consideration the dilemma many families face. If they chose to go back to their home countries, they risk leaving their loved one behind, but if they choose to stay here undocumented, then they will continue to live in the shadows. The platform seeks to incorporate those immigrants into out communities through a legal process.
The immigration issues of today are complex, with no easy answers. The Democratic and Republican Parties each have clearly made what side they stand on. The outcome of this race will have repercussions that will be felt for generations to come.
